Cefuroxime axetil
Indications/Uses
Upper & lower resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections, gonorrhoea, acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis. Oral susp: Early Lyme disease & subsequent prevention of late Lyme disease in adults & childn >12 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Most infections, mild to moderate lower resp tract infections eg, bronchitis, pyelonephritis 250 mg bd. More severe lower resp tract infections or suspected pneumonia 500 mg bd. UTI 125-250 mg bd. Pyelonephritis 250 mg bd. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea 1 g as single dose. Childn 125 mg bd. Max: 250 mg daily. Otitis media Childn >2 yr 250 mg bd or 15 mg/kg bd. Max: 500 mg daily, <2 yr 125 mg bd or 10 mg/kg bd. Max: 250 mg daily. Oral susp Lyme disease Adult & childn >12 yr 500 mg bd for 20 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Tab: History of severe hypersensitivity to other β-lactams.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if allergic reaction occurs. Hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems or other β-lactams. Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms due to prolonged use; pseudomembranous colitis. May cause +ve Coombs' test; false +ve ferricyanide test. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <3 mth. Cap: Slight interference w/ Cu reduction methods eg, Benedict's/Fehlings, Clinitest. Concurrent treatment w/ potent diuretics eg, frusemide.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting; pseudomembranous colitis; headache; eosinophilia, transient increased hepatic enzymes.
Drug Interactions
Lowered bioavailability & canceled effects of postprandial absorption w/ drugs reducing gastric acidity. Cap: Increased serum t½ w/ probenecid. Tab: Lowered oestrogen reabsorption & reduced efficacy of combined OCs.
